This year's sixth edition of the Green Day of Slovenian Tourism will take place on Wednesday, May 25, in Krško at the Tri lučke estate. The focus of the event will be put on waste management in tourism and reducing their footprint in the environment.

Disposable plastics and other waste have been identified as one of the most pressing topics in tourism, both in Slovenia and around the world. This issue also needs to be addressed because the use of single-use plastics has increased dramatically during the Covid-19 pandemic. There is also a lot going on in the field of legislation dealing with plastics and waste (at European and national level), one of the most important aspects of economic recovery is the European Green Deal. Along with plastics, waste food is an extremely big challenge in tourism – reducing the amount of food waste has been proven to reduce costs and reduce environmental impact. In both cases, it is important to first understand where waste is generated. Only then can we begin to look for alternatives or introduce changes in use and behaviour. This year's Green Day of Slovenian Tourism will discuss the latest findings and the best domestic examples of good practice.

Among the speakers are:

  • Dr. Uroš Novak, Head of the research group for Bioplastics, bio-composites and zero-waste technologies at the Institute of Chemistry, an innovator and promoter of science and co-founder of two start-ups that contribute to a waste-free society.

  • Jožica Peljhan, MSc., a coordinator for zero waste at Bled Infrastructure. This year, the municipalities of Bled and Gorje became the first European certified zero waste municipalities according to the Mission Zero Academy, as they are successfully implementing measures on the way to a waste-free society.

  • Chef Luka Košir from Grič restaurant, who is one of the most promising young Slovenian chefs. His story is based on avant-garde approaches to local, traceable and sustainable cuisine. By using traditional and modern storage techniques, he transforms ingredients from the garden, fields, nearby forests, meadows, streams and other delicacies of local growers, hunters into unique dishes. Grič recently also received their first Michelin star, and his efforts for sustainability were rewarded with a green Michelin star, the Green Key certificate and the Slovenia Green Cuisine label.

  • Ksenja Kragl, Tourism consultant and project manager at the Krško Centre for Entrepreneurship and Tourism and a member of the green team of Krško. The Krško Centre for Entrepreneurship and Tourism Public Institution pays special attention to the sustainable development of tourism and the organization of events without unnecessary packaging.
