General study tour: ICONS OF SLOVENIAN TOURISM

On your journey from the capital to the Karst, from the sea to the Alps, you will be discovering, along with landscape diversity, the capital of Slovenia, major natural and cultural sights, and destinations for relaxation and active holidays.

  • Ljubljana, European Green Capital 2016,
  • Postojna Cave, the underground kingdom of Karst,
  • Piran and Portorož, seaside jewels,
  • Lipica, the cradle of white horses,
  • Bled, an iconic island with a wishing bell in the middle of an Alpine lake,
  • Kranjska Gora, famous mountain resort in the Julian Alps and the host of the SIW 2018.

Icons of Slovenian tourism will first reveal the Slovenian capital Ljubljana, European Green Capital 2016. Let us take a walk through the city centre, which is entirely closed for motorised traffic and ideal for admiring vivid architecture and the green embankments of the Ljubljanica River.

Our next goal will be the cave train in the Postojna Cave Park, the underground kingdom of stalagmites and stalactites. We discover a misty underground kingdom with more than 10,000 caves.

We will continue to the Adriatic coast, to the mediaeval and romantic town of Piran, the hometown of the eminent violinist Giuseppe Tartini and later on to the lively and cosmopolitan Portorož, that will bring back memories of the golden age of Austro-Hungarian high society.

The next day we will go to Lipica, where many centuries ago a story of love, pride and beauty began. Lipizzan horses are the pride of Slovenia and Lipica Stud Farm is one of the world’s oldest stud farms.

In the second part of the day we will visit the only Slovenian island – Bled Island, located in the middle of an emerald Alpine Lake. Visitors can visit Bled island by a traditional boat known as a pletna. The image of paradise is completed by Bled Castle atop a high cliff above the lakeshore.

Our tour will finish in Kranjska Gora, a famous mountain resort in the heart of Julian Alps and this year`s host of Slovenian Incoming Workshop.

We reserve the right to change or modify the routes.

The programme of the tour is subject to change, in accordance with your first overnight (Ljubljana/Portorož).

THE CHALLENGING BEAUTY OF KRANJSKA GORA AND ITS SURROUNDINGS

In Kranjska Gora each season is charming in its own way.

Kranjska Gora was a shepherd’s settlement in the 14th century. Since then, it became one of the best skiing and winter destinations in Slovenia.

Our first stop will be in Planica, a picturesque Alpine valley on the edge of Triglav National Park with a rich tradition of Nordic skiing. Planica is the traditional venue for the finals of the Ski Jumping World Cup visited by over 10.000 people every year.

We will continue our discovering of Kranjska Gora at Lake Zelenci, where we will take a walk along a special wooden footpath to the lake and its marshy surroundings.

After Zelenci we will drive towards Vršič pass, with his 1611 m highest mountain road pass in eastern Julian Alps.  At the top we will make a stop for an unforgettable view of the Julian Alps peaks and a lunch in one of the mountain huts.

After lunch we will drive to the idyllic Alpine village Mojstrana, a former mining and ironwork settlement. In Mojstrana we will choose between two different activities – visit of the Slovenian mountaineering museum or Via Ferrata Grančišče walking tour.
